Fellow Pilgrims in Christ,

Today we recall with reverence the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, a feast that commemorates the martyrdom of the great Forerunner of the Lord. John’s life had been marked by fiery preaching, calling Israel to repentance and preparing the way for Christ. Yet his mission ended in prison, cut short by the pride of rulers and the schemes of the wicked.

The Gospels tell us that King Herod had John arrested for condemning his unlawful marriage to Herodias. At Herod’s birthday feast, Herodias’s daughter danced before him, and Herod—foolishly bound by an oath—granted her mother’s vengeful request: the head of John on a platter. Though reluctant, Herod ordered John’s execution. The voice that had cried out in the wilderness was silenced, but only in the earthly sense.

For in truth, John’s witness could not be quenched. By his death, he became the first to shed blood for Christ, foreshadowing the Passion of Our Lord. He is the fearless herald of truth, a prophet who dared to stand against corruption and sin, even at the cost of his life.

The Church calls us today to imitate his courage. We may not face swords or prisons, but we are daily invited to stand firm in truth, purity, and fidelity. John reminds us that holiness is costly, but the reward is eternal.

May we, like him, live with boldness of faith so that our voices never fall silent in proclaiming Christ.
