$5.00
Journey with St. William of Vercelli, the holy hermit and founder of the Congregation of Monte Vergine, depicted here as a pilgrim in the rugged Italian mountains—accompanied by the loyal, obedient wolf who once carried stones for the chapel he built.
This vibrant digital portrait captures his spiritual strength and unwavering trust in God’s will. The golden halo, scallop shell, and mountainous pilgrimage path reflect his interior journey from noble orphan to saintly abbot, while the wolf symbolizes divine providence and William’s miraculous authority over nature.
Born around 1085 in Vercelli, northern Italy, St. William was orphaned young and devoted his life to God. He made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and later withdrew to the remote heights of Monte Vergine for prayer, penance, and solitude. There, he founded a monastic community dedicated to Our Lady and Benedictine discipline.
His most famous miracle recounts how, after a wolf killed his donkey, William rebuked the beast—and it obeyed him, taking the donkey’s place in building the chapel.
He later advised King Roger II of Sicily and established several monasteries before dying in 1142, having predicted the hour of his death.
