This stunning digital watercolor print portrays St. Stephen of Hungary (c. 975–1038), the nation’s first Christian king and one of the greatest saints of medieval Europe. Depicted in regal robes with orb and cross, and crowned with the legendary Holy Crown of Hungary, Stephen is shown not only as a monarch but as a servant of Christ and Mary. His luminous halo and the vibrant crowds behind him reflect his enduring role as founder of Catholic Hungary.
Short Biography:
Born Vajk around 975, Stephen was baptized and given his Christian name after the Church’s first martyr. On Christmas Day in the year 1000, Pope Sylvester II sent the crown that made him the first King of Hungary. He organized dioceses, built churches, welcomed missionaries, and protected the poor through laws rooted in Christian justice. Most significantly, he consecrated Hungary to the Blessed Virgin Mary, declaring her the nation’s Patroness and Queen. Stephen died on August 15, 1038, the Feast of the Assumption, entrusting his kingdom to Mary. He was canonized in 1083.
