$5.00
This striking and regal digital portrait commemorates St. Stanisław of Szczepanów (1030–1079), bishop and martyr, revered as one of the greatest saints of Poland. Depicted in ornate episcopal vestments with richly embroidered gold detailing, he raises his hand in bold exhortation, symbolizing his fearless defense of the Church against royal tyranny. Behind him stands King Bolesław II, foreshadowing the dramatic conflict that led to Stanisław’s martyrdom. The backdrop of Wawel Cathedral connects the image to the sacred landscape of Polish history and faith.
Short Biography
Stanisław was born near Kraków and became Bishop of Kraków in 1072. A zealous pastor and reformer, he spoke out against the abuses of King Bolesław II the Bold, particularly condemning the king’s immoral conduct. When the king refused to repent, Stanisław excommunicated him—leading to the bishop's assassination during Mass at the altar. His martyrdom sparked a national crisis, eventually resulting in the king’s exile. Canonized in 1253, St. Stanisław became a symbol of moral courage, ecclesial authority, and national identity.
