Short Biography:

Born in 1542 in Montepulciano, Italy, Robert Bellarmine joined the Jesuits as a young man and became one of the greatest theologians of his age. His Disputations on the Controversies became the definitive Catholic response to the Reformation, yet he remained humble, giving most of his income to the poor. As a cardinal and archbishop, he preached simply so that all could understand. He was the spiritual director of St. Aloysius Gonzaga and wrote spiritual classics such as The Ascent of the Mind to God and The Art of Dying Well. Canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church, he is a patron of catechists, catechumens, and canon lawyers.
