Clothed in noble garments and crowned with a radiant halo, St. Paul Miki stands at the forefront of this breathtaking digital portrait, surrounded by his fellow martyrs—Japanese Christians, both lay and religious, who gave their lives for Christ in 1597. The composition radiates courage and faith, with golden Asian calligraphy reverently inscribed behind them, proclaiming the name of Jesus.

This image honors one of the most heroic chapters in the Church's missionary history, capturing both the serenity and unshakable devotion of those crucified for their faith on a hillside in Nagasaki. A testament to fidelity unto death, this artwork serves as a striking call to evangelization, witness, and perseverance.

Short Biography:
St. Paul Miki was a Japanese Jesuit seminarian and skilled preacher who boldly proclaimed the Gospel across Japan. During a time of Christian persecution under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Paul and 25 others—missionaries, laymen, and even children—were arrested, marched 600 miles in winter, and crucified in Nagasaki on February 5, 1597.

From the cross, Paul Miki forgave his executioners and preached one final sermon, proclaiming that Christ alone is the way to salvation. He and his companions became the first martyrs of Japan, sowing seeds of faith that would take root in silence for centuries.

Symbolism & Details:

  • Golden Halo – Heavenly glory and sainthood

  • Traditional Japanese Robes – Cultural authenticity and honor

  • Companions in the Background – Representing the 26 martyrs, united in witness

  • Posture of Prayer – Perseverance, forgiveness, and evangelization in suffering

The Japanese characters in the background offer symbolic layers of meaning:

  • On the left, the inscription 表のろ is an artistic rendering, likely meant to evoke “those who reveal or express (表) the way of Christ,” in connection with the Jesuit mission. The inclusion of and the English “JESUITS” may be a phonetic or symbolic approximation.

  • On the right, 練植者 translates roughly to “trained planter” or “one who cultivates,” a poetic way to describe a missionary—a sower of the Gospel.
