St. Maurice and Companions – Soldiers of Christ

This digital artwork depicts St. Maurice, the noble Egyptian officer who led the Theban Legion, standing resolute with his men. Clad in ornate Roman armor and a flowing red cloak, Maurice raises his hand in holy defiance, declaring that his loyalty to Christ outweighed all earthly commands. Behind him, his companions stand as faithful soldiers, each prepared to lay down their life rather than betray the Gospel.

The Legion’s martyrdom at Agaunum in Switzerland — thousands executed under Emperor Maximian for refusing to worship pagan gods or persecute Christians — became one of the most powerful testimonies of Christian courage in the early Church. Their blood consecrated the soil, and in time a great abbey rose on the site, making their memory a beacon across Europe.

St. Maurice, a Christian officer from Thebes in Egypt, commanded a legion of over 6,000 Christian soldiers. In 285 AD, when ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods and persecute Christians, he and his men refused. Maximian punished them with repeated decimations and finally commanded the massacre of the entire legion. Not one soldier broke ranks with his faith.

Their witness reminds us that our first allegiance belongs to Christ. St. Maurice is honored today as the patron of soldiers, armies, and all who must choose justice over compromise.
