Short Biography:
Born in Manila in the early 1600s, St. Lorenzo Ruiz was a devoted husband, father, and member of the Confraternity of the Rosary. Falsely accused and fleeing persecution, he joined Dominican missionaries traveling to Japan—where he was arrested and subjected to horrific torture. Despite brutal suffering, he refused to deny Christ, declaring, “I am a Catholic, and I will die a Catholic.” He was martyred in Nagasaki in 1637, and canonized in 1987.He is the first canonized saint from the Philippines.
