St. Lawrence of Brindisi – The Scholar with a Crucifix
Catholic Digital Art Download
$5.00
This high-resolution digital portrait captures St. Lawrence of Brindisi, the great Capuchin friar, Doctor of the Church, and fearless chaplain of the battlefield. Rendered in our signature ultra-lifelike watercolor style, he is depicted riding into the Battle of Stuhlweissenburg (1601), holding high the crucifix—his only weapon against the invading Ottoman forces. Behind him, banners wave and soldiers rally under his spiritual leadership.
With radiant detail, golden tones, and an ornate halo etched in Latin, this portrait embodies his motto:
"To whom much is given, much will be required." (Luke 12:48)
Born Giulio Cesare Russo in 1559 in Brindisi, Italy, Lawrence was a gifted linguist, theologian, and Capuchin friar who mastered seven languages and used every gift to serve the Church. He preached across Europe during the Counter-Reformation, wrote 15 volumes of theological works, and once led Christian troops into battle—unarmed—carrying only a crucifix. He died on mission in 1619 and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1959.

Crucifix: His true weapon—faith in Christ.
Horse and battle scene: His role as chaplain and leader at the front lines.
