This radiant portrait of St. Lawrence captures the youthful zeal and holy defiance of one of the Church’s most beloved deacons. Clothed in rich diaconal vestments of gold and sapphire, he extends his hands overflowing with coins—not to keep, but to give. Behind him, the streets of ancient Rome teem with the poor, the sick, and the forgotten—those he boldly called “the treasures of the Church.”

His gaze is solemn and resolute, fixed on eternity, as fire burns in the distance—a foreshadowing of the martyrdom he would embrace. This artwork invites viewers to meditate on sacrificial love, service to the poor, and the divine irony of heavenly wealth hidden in earthly suffering.

Short Biography:
St. Lawrence was a deacon of the early Roman Church under Pope Sixtus II. When the emperor demanded he turn over the Church’s wealth, Lawrence instead gathered the poor and declared, “These are the Church’s treasures.” For this act of defiant faith, he was sentenced to death and famously martyred by being roasted on a gridiron in 258 AD. Even in his final agony, he kept his humor and his hope, reportedly saying, “Turn me over; I’m done on this side.”

He is remembered as the patron of deacons, cooks, and the poor—an enduring symbol of Christian charity and holy courage.
