This stunning high-resolution watercolor-style portrait captures St. Junípero Serra, the tireless missionary and founder of the California missions. Shown walking the rugged Camino Real, staff in hand, the saint is surrounded by a native convert and a fellow friar, with a humble horse in the background—symbolizing his perseverance, companionship, and spiritual leadership.
His face is lined with the wisdom of age and the resolve of purpose. A radiant, ornate golden halo crowns his head, emphasizing his canonized status and his unshakeable devotion to Christ. Set against a sun-washed California landscape, this piece evokes both the physical and spiritual journey of evangelization.
Short Biography:
Born in 1713 on the island of Mallorca, St. Junípero Serra was a Franciscan priest and scholar who left behind a promising academic career to evangelize the New World. He founded 9 of the 21 California missions and baptized thousands, teaching both the faith and practical skills like farming, animal husbandry, and the arts. He died in 1784 and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015—the first saint to be canonized on U.S. soil.
