St. John the Baptist (1st c. BC–AD 30) was the last prophet of the Old Covenant and the herald of the Messiah. Born in Ein Kerem to the priest Zechariah and Elizabeth, he was sanctified in the womb when he leapt at Mary’s Visitation (Luke 1:41). Living an ascetic life in the Judean desert, he preached repentance and baptized in the Jordan, where he witnessed the Father’s voice and the Spirit descending upon Jesus (Matt 3:13-17). Imprisoned for condemning Herod Antipas’s unlawful marriage, he was martyred but remains the Church’s model of courage and humility.
“He must increase; I must decrease.” – John 3:30
