This portrait of St. John Neumann (1811–1860) captures the humble yet visionary bishop who laid the foundations of Catholic education in the United States. Born in Bohemia and ordained in New York, he devoted his life to serving immigrant families. As Bishop of Philadelphia, he established over one hundred Catholic schools, ensuring that children of all backgrounds could learn the faith alongside their studies. This image reflects his pastoral care, missionary zeal, and enduring legacy as patron of Catholic education.
John Neumann was born in Bohemia in 1811 and emigrated to America in 1836. Ordained in New York, he served vast wilderness parishes on foot, carrying the sacraments to isolated families. Later, he joined the Redemptorists, becoming known for humility and missionary zeal. In 1852, he was appointed Bishop of Philadelphia. Small in stature but great in faith, he organized the diocesan school system, welcoming teaching orders and building churches, hospitals, and orphanages. He died suddenly in 1860 at just 48 years old and was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1977.
