St. Charles Lwanga & Companions | Martyrs of Uganda
Catholic Digital Art Download
$5.00
This powerful and reverent digital artwork honors St. Charles Lwanga and the young Ugandan martyrs who gave their lives for Christ between 1885–1887. Clothed in traditional East African wraps, they stand in serene defiance against a turbulent sky—firm in faith, unshaken by persecution. Charles, in the center, holds a palm frond of martyrdom and wears a cross symbolizing his Christian identity. A glowing halo mark his sanctity, and the grassy plains of Uganda root the scene in its sacred geography.
Short Biography
St. Charles Lwanga was a royal page in the court of King Mwanga II of Buganda. When the king began persecuting Christians—especially targeting those who refused to engage in immoral acts—Charles became a leader of the young converts. He protected younger boys and instructed them in the Catholic faith. He and 21 companions, most teenagers, were brutally martyred for refusing to renounce Christ. They were canonized in 1964 by Pope Paul VI and are celebrated as heroic models of purity, fidelity, and courage.
