This digital portrait captures Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, the beloved young Italian mountaineer, often called the “Man of the Beatitudes.” Dressed in his iconic hiking attire—rolled-up sleeves, a tie, and sturdy boots—he stands joyfully against the mountain peaks that became his path of prayer and sacrifice. A radiant ornate golden halo encircles his head with the inscription Sanctus Petrus Georgius Frassati.

Symbols enrich the portrait with deep meaning:

  • He holds a wooden staff topped with a crucifix, symbolizing his motto Verso l’Alto—“To the Heights.”

  • A rosary hangs from his belt, representing his Marian devotion.

  • A white lily blooms nearby, symbolizing purity of heart.

  • At his feet lie climbing rope and a lantern, recalling both adventure and guiding light.

  • A basket of bread signifies his hidden charity to the poor.

  • A soccer ball reminds us of his youthful joy and ordinary life.

  • Behind him rises a mountain chapel, connecting his life of faith with the eternal heights of heaven.

Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925) was born into a prominent Italian family but chose a life of simplicity, service, and devotion. An avid mountaineer, he united his love of nature with his love for God, often leading friends in prayer on mountain trails. Known for his secret acts of charity, he gave food, clothing, and his own money to the poor. His joyful spirit and devotion to the Eucharist earned him the title “Man of the Beatitudes.”

Pier Giorgio died suddenly at age 24 from polio, contracted while serving the sick. Thousands attended his funeral, including the poor he had so quietly served. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1990, who praised him as a model for youth.
