Short Biography:
St. John Chrysostom (c. 347–407 AD) was born in Antioch and trained as a brilliant orator before dedicating his life to Christ as a monk and priest. He became Archbishop of Constantinople, where his fiery sermons called emperors, clergy, and laity to repentance. Exiled for his fearless preaching, he died with the words: “Glory be to God for all things.” Today he is honored as a Doctor of the Church.
Symbolism in the Art:
The portrait shows St. John vested in gold-and-white Byzantine liturgical robes, standing in the sanctuary with his right hand raised in blessing. The open Gospel book glows with divine light, symbolizing his preaching, while the chalice and loaves point to his care for the Eucharist. His golden halo is inscribed with his name in Greek, honoring his Eastern Christian heritage.
