Feast Day: October 17 | Patronage: The Church in the East, Writers, Martyrs

In the first century, when the Christian faith was still young and under persecution, Saint Ignatius of Antioch emerged as one of its bravest shepherds. Born around 35 AD, Ignatius was said to have been a disciple of Saint John the Apostle, giving him a direct link to the age of the Apostles. As Bishop of Antioch, he guided one of the earliest Christian communities—where followers of Christ were first called Christians.

During the reign of Emperor Trajan, Ignatius was arrested for refusing to worship pagan gods. Bound in chains, he was escorted from Antioch to Rome, where he would meet his martyrdom in the Colosseum. Along this journey, he wrote seven letters to the early churches, writings that remain treasures of the Church today. These letters reflect his deep love for the Eucharist, his defense of the Incarnation, and his vision of unity under the bishop as the heart of Christian life.

He called the Eucharist “the medicine of immortality” and declared, “I am God’s wheat, and I am ground by the teeth of wild beasts, that I may be found pure bread of Christ.” To Ignatius, martyrdom was not defeat—it was union with Christ, the final act of love and witness.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–107 AD) was the third bishop of Antioch and one of the earliest Christian martyrs. Trained by Saint John, he defended the faith against heresies and helped form the early Church’s hierarchy. His journey to Rome inspired courage across the Christian world, and his writings continue to illuminate the faith today.
