Born in Belgium as Jozef De Veuster in 1840, Saint Damien answered the call to serve the lepers of Kalaupapa, Hawaii. Despite contracting the disease himself, he continued his work until his death in 1889. He was canonized on October 11, 2009, and is celebrated as a model of compassion, courage, and unwavering faith.
